“Social housing needs to be at the heart of the solution to the housing crisis.”
This was the conclusion of Shelter’s Social Housing Commission in January this year. I was fortunate enough to serve on the commission which challenged all parties to commit to transforming our country’s approach to social housing. For more information on the Commission’s conclusions, read my article in the New Statesman.
Today I attended a round-table discussion, hosted by the Confederation of British Industry, in my constituency in Doncaster North to discuss ‘A business vision for affordable housing’. I was pleased to be reunited with Greg Beales from Shelter who I worked with on Shelter‘s Social Housing Commission.
It was great to have the opportunity to discuss the findings of the report with senior officers from housing associations and local authorities in Yorkshire. There was agreement on all sides that it’s time for housing to be a national infrastructure priority.
