Over 140 years ago, the UK became the first country in the world to open a coal fired power station. Today, on the first of October, it will be the first day since 1882 that coal has not powered Great Britain.
The closure of the last coal power station, Ratcliffe-on-Soar, is a moment to mark the incredible contribution of coal to our energy supplies and thank the workers who powered our country.
Coal did not just power our country; it provided well-paid jobs for communities like Doncaster North. Young people worked in the industry as apprentices, built their skills and had lifelong careers.
This government is determined that the same coalfield communities who were at the heart of coal-fired power generation will be at the centre of our mission for clean power by 2030. This transition can provide the good jobs at decent wages that our communities so urgently need, and we are committed to ensuring our coalfield communities are at the forefront of this opportunity.
